I grew up in the Midwest and now live in the Southwestern desert.
I've been drawing since childhood and always reading and/or drawing
comics
and cartoons. The comics I grew up on were 60's Marvel and DC. The
comic
book industry's renaissance in the 80's got me following titles I
hadn't
read in years, and discovering new ones such as Sandman and V
for Vendetta. At about 21, I started weightlifting, and have competed in 2 powerlifting meets. I've also studied Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu and sparred in tournaments...all good experience for drawing fight scenes! Other interests: guitar (I'm an OK rhythm guitar player), 50's - 60's rock 'n' roll, punk/goth/alternative music, science fiction and fantasy stories and films, model building, flying RC planes and rockets. (Comic books and building models...is this craftsmanship and creativity or is it total geekhood?) Likes: TV: Gearhead programming (American Choppers), Ultimate Fighter, International Fight League, Discovery & History Channel, Heroes, Sci Fi channel, Smallville, The Shield, Animal Cops, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Mad Men. Music: 50's and 60's rock 'n' roll, punk's first wave, Americana, roots music (punkabilly, alt country.) Gun Club. Anything Velvet Underground/Modern Lovers related. Current faves...Rancid, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, garage-band revivalists The Strokes, Hives, Vines. Movies: Alien, Aliens, 1st Star Wars trilogy, Blade Runner, Terminator 1 and 2, Star Trek: the Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan, Predator, The Commitments, Falling Down, Chocolat, Broadcast News, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Back to the Future, Primal Fear, Fearless, Monkey Shines, ET, Mad Max, The Road Warrior, Road Warrior: Beyond Thunderdome, Unforgiven, Pale Rider, My Bodyguard, Edward Scissorhands, Batman, X Men, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, The Straight Story. Pre 80s: The Boys From Brazil, Rear Window, Vertigo, Psycho, The Manchurian Candidate, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, Farenheit 451, It's A Wonderful Life, Sunset Boulevard, A Lion in Winter, Fantasia, The Mummy, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolfman, The Creature From the Black Lagoon, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Wizard of Oz, The Fly (original). Gay/Gay realted films: Gods and Monsters, The Sum of Us, Young Soul Rebels, Parting Glances, Velvet Goldmine, The Hours and the Times. Books/Stories: The Golden (1940s - 60s) Age of Science Fiction. My favorite genre is the short story, such as gems like "The Little Black Bag," "It's a Good Life," "The Cold Equations"...too many to list here. Some faves include Isaac Asimov's "The Last Question," "The Ugly Little Boy," and any number of the robot stories. And there is the incomparable Theodore Sturgeon, with classics like "The Other Man," "The Perfect Host," and "Maturity," and "The World Well Lost." I love nonfiction, anything to do with history, archeology and science. Currently reading/ recently read: The Iliad, translated by Ennis Rees. |
